Who's behind xoxkn.it Studio?
I'm Donatella.
I learned to knit when I was seven. My aunt and uncle had a haute-couture knitwear factory, and for the first years of my life it was my playroom: the cones of yarn, the discs of paraffin, the machines β enormous, back then β and the master knitters, who to me were all 'aunties'. They spoiled me and, without meaning to, they taught me to always look for the flaw in the egg.
I bought my first knitting machine in 1983. Second-hand, and in decidedly poor shape. I made sweaters on it for the paninari.
I never stopped after that. I studied fashion design in Bergamo, and I spent forty years designing knitwear on domestic machines β the same ones I sell, repair and teach people to use today.
And for forty years I designed all of it the old way: highlighters, paper and scissors. Then modernity arrived: Excel.
In the other design fields the tools exist, and they are good. In knitwear they don't. So at a certain point I asked myself which tools I would actually have wanted β and I made them for myself. That's where xoxkn.it Studio came from.
You'll find the machines, the accessories and the spare parts in my shop β and if you want to learn, the online courses are there too.
In 2020 I knitted scarves and sold them. The proceeds went to healthcare workers: more than 20,000 euros. It is one of the things I am most proud of, and it has nothing to do with the software β but if you're still reading, it felt right to tell you.
Forty years of knitwear
Every piece here was designed and knitted on a domestic machine, and every one of them was made before Studio existed β with highlighters, paper and a spreadsheet. That is the point: Studio is the tool I wanted while I was making these.
